Ingredients

For the Onion

  • 1 large large onion (preferably a sweet onion) Sweet onions are ideal for milder flavor.
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour Can substitute with gluten-free flour.
  • 1 tablespoon paprika Can substitute with cayenne or chili powder for spice.
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper Optional for spice.
  • 2 large eggs Beaten until well combined.
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs (panko works well) Use gluten-free breadcrumbs for a gluten-free version.
  • cooking spray (or olive oil spray)
  • salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

Preparation

  • Prepare the onion by cutting off the top and peeling it. Place the onion cut side down on a cutting board.
  • With a sharp knife, make deep cuts starting from the top, slicing downward toward the bottom, without cutting all the way through. Aim for about 12-16 petals.
  • Gently separate the onion petals to mimic a blooming flower. Rinse under cold water and shake off any excess water.

Breading

  • In a bowl, mix the flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, salt, and pepper.
  • In another bowl, beat the eggs until well combined.
  • In a third bowl, place the breadcrumbs.
  • Dip the onion into the flour mixture first, making sure to coat every petal. Shake off any excess flour.
  • Next, dip the onion into the egg mixture, allowing it to soak in the egg.
  • Finally, toss the onion in the breadcrumb mixture until fully coated.

Cooking

  • Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C).
  • Spray the breaded onion generously with cooking spray.
  • Place the onion in the air fryer basket, ensuring it lies flat and has space around it for air circulation.
  • Cook for about 20 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy. Check halfway through and rotate if needed.
  • Carefully remove the onion from the air fryer; let it cool slightly before serving.

Notes

For variations, consider stuffing the onion petals with cheese or altering the spice blend. Store leftovers wrapped tightly to maintain crispiness, and reheat in the air fryer. Avoid microwave reheating to prevent sogginess.
