Ingredients

For the Breading

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs beaten
  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder

For the Tomatoes

  • 3 medium green tomatoes sliced 1/2-inch thick
  • cooking spray or oil mist for spraying air fryer basket

Instructions

Preparation

  • Wash and dry the green tomatoes. Cut them into 1/2-inch thick slices.
  • Set up a breading station with three shallow bowls: the first with flour, the second with beaten eggs, and the third with a mix of cornmeal, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder.

Breading

  • Dip each tomato slice into the flour, coating both sides. Then dip it into the beaten eggs, letting excess drip off.
  • Finally, coat the slice in the cornmeal mixture, pressing gently to ensure it sticks.

Cooking

  • Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C).
  • Lightly spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray or oil mist.
  • Place the breaded tomato slices in a single layer in the air fryer basket, making sure not to overcrowd them.
  • Cook for about 8-10 minutes, flipping halfway through, until they are golden brown and crispy.
  • Remove the fried green tomatoes from the air fryer and serve them hot.

Notes

Serve as an appetizer or side dish. Pair with a spicy remoulade or ranch dressing for dipping. For variations, try different coatings like crushed corn flakes or add cheese into the cornmeal batter.
