  • 1 pound ground beef or turkey Lean ground turkey can be used for a lighter option.
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 14.5 oz can diced tomatoes
  • 8 oz can tomato sauce
  • 4 cups chicken or vegetable broth
  • 1 small head cabbage, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • to taste salt and pepper
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil For sautéing.

Preparation

  • Heat the olive oil in a large pot over medium heat.
  • Add the diced onion and minced garlic into the pot and sauté until the onion becomes translucent, about 3-5 minutes.
  • Introduce the ground meat of your choice, breaking it up as it cooks over 5-7 minutes. Drain any excess grease.
  • Stir in the diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, and broth until well combined.
  • Add chopped cabbage, dried basil, dried oregano, and season with salt and pepper.
  • Bring the mixture to a boil, reduce heat, and let it simmer for about 30 minutes.
  • Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary.
  • Serve hot, garnished with fresh herbs or sour cream if desired.
