Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the diced onion and a pinch of salt. Cover and cook for 7 minutes until tender.
Add minced garlic and crushed red pepper. Cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
Stir in halved cherry tomatoes. Cover and cook for 5 minutes, then uncover and simmer for 5–7 more minutes until tomatoes soften and release their juices.
Meanwhile, cook spaghetti in salted boiling water until al dente. Reserve 3/4 cup of pasta water before draining.
Add drained pasta to the tomato sauce with 1/2 cup reserved pasta water and butter. Stir over medium heat for 1 minute until the sauce coats the pasta.
