Ingredients

Dough ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup whole milk heated until warm
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter divided
  • 2 large eggs

Cinnamon sugar topping

  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar for topping
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter for brushing

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a small saucepan, heat the milk and 1/4 cup of butter until warm but not hot. Remove from heat and sprinkle the yeast over the warm milk. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until foamy.
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, granulated sugar, and salt. Add the yeast mixture along with the eggs and mix until the dough comes together.
  • Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8-10 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
  • Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it doubles in size.

Making the knots

  • In a bowl, mix together the brown sugar and cinnamon. Set aside.
  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Punch down the risen dough and turn it out onto a floured surface. Roll it into a rectangle about 1/4 inch thick.
  • Spread the remaining butter over the rectangle, then sprinkle the cinnamon sugar mixture evenly on top.
  • Cut the dough into strips about 1 inch wide. Take each strip and tie it into a knot. Place the knots on the prepared baking sheet.
  • Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown.
  • Allow them to cool slightly before serving.

Notes

For an extra layer of sweetness, drizzle icing made from powdered sugar and milk over the knots after they cool slightly. Warm knots can be served with coffee or tea, or as a cozy dessert after dinner.
