Casserole Ingredients

  • 1 loaf 16-oz loaf French bread Can use stale bread for better absorption
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • ½ cup sugar
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 6 large eggs
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour

Topping Ingredients

  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • ¼ cup butter Softened
  • ¼ tsp cinnamon
  • ¾ cup powdered sugar For serving
  • 2 Tbsp milk For glaze
  • ¼ tsp ground cinnamon For glaze

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Cut the French bread into cubes.
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the whole milk, sugar, vanilla extract, eggs, ground cinnamon, and flour. Whisk until smooth.
  • Add the cubed bread to the mixture and gently fold until coated. Let sit for 15-20 minutes.

Cooking

  • Grease the crock pot with softened butter.
  • Pour the soaked bread mixture into the crock pot and level it out.
  • Cover and cook on low for 6-8 hours or on high for 3-4 hours.
  • In a separate bowl, mix brown sugar, softened butter, and ground cinnamon for the topping.
  • Sprinkle the topping over the casserole halfway through cooking.
  • Check for doneness; a toothpick should come out clean from the center.

Serving

  • Scoop portions and serve with fresh berries, powdered sugar, maple syrup, or whipped cream.
  • Pair with coffee, tea, or mimosas.

Notes

Use day-old bread for best results. Let the casserole sit overnight for optimal flavor and texture. Experiment with flavors by adding chocolate chips, dried fruits, or nuts.
