French Butter Cookies

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened Ensure butter is softened but not melted.
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 large egg yolk
  • optional powdered sugar for dusting Optional for serving.

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until smooth and fluffy.
  • Add the egg yolk and vanilla extract to the butter mixture, stirring until well combined.
  • Gradually sift in the all-purpose flour and salt, mixing gently until a dough forms.
  • Shape the dough into a log, wrap in plastic wrap, and chill in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes.

Baking

  • Once chilled, slice the log into even round pieces about 1/4 inch thick.
  • Place the cookies on the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about 1 inch apart.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes or until the edges are lightly golden.
  • Remove from the oven and let cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack.

Serving

  • Dust with powdered sugar before serving, if desired.

Notes

Store cooled cookies in an airtight container for up to a week. For longer storage, freeze them in a single layer before transferring to a freezer-safe bag.
