Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1 cup applesauce Serves as the base for the gumdrops.
  • 2 cups granulated sugar Essential for sweetness and chewy texture.
  • 1 package (3 oz) flavored gelatin Choose your favorite flavor.
  • 1/4 cup corn syrup Prevents the sugar from crystallizing.
  • 1/4 cup water Needed to dissolve the sugar.
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice Adds brightness and balances sweetness.
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar (for coating) Used to roll the finished gumdrops.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Gather all your ingredients. In a medium saucepan, combine the applesauce, granulated sugar, flavored gelatin, corn syrup, water, and lemon juice. Mix well to eliminate lumps.
  • Place the saucepan over medium heat and stir constantly until it comes to a boil, ensuring even dissolution of sugar and gelatin.
  • Once it boils, reduce heat to low and simmer while stirring occasionally for about 10 minutes to thicken the mixture slightly.
  • Prepare a shallow dish by lightly greasing it, then pour the warm mixture into the dish, spreading it evenly. Let it cool and set at room temperature for several hours.
  • When cooled and firm, cut the mixture into shapes or squares. Roll each piece in granulated sugar to coat.
  • Place the coated gumdrops on a parchment-lined baking sheet and allow them to dry for several hours.

Notes

Store gumdrops in an airtight container layered with parchment paper if sticky. They can last up to a week at room temperature, or longer in the refrigerator, but may become tougher.
