Ingredients
  

Crust and Topping

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats (optional)

Apple Filling

  • 3 cups peeled and sliced apples
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a 9x13-inch baking pan with parchment paper.
  • In a large bowl, mix together the flour, granulated sugar, brown sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  • Cut in the softened butter using a pastry cutter or fork until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  • Stir in the vanilla extract.
  • Reserve about 1 cup of the crumb mixture for topping, and press the remaining mixture into the bottom of the prepared baking pan to form the crust.

Apple Mixture

  • In another bowl, toss the sliced apples with lemon juice, cinnamon, and nutmeg until well coated.
  • Spread the apple mixture evenly over the crust in the baking pan.

Baking

  • Crumble the reserved mixture over the apples, and if using, sprinkle the rolled oats on top.
  • Bake for about 35-40 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender.
  • Once baked, let cool completely in the pan before slicing into bars and serving.

Notes

Serve warm or at room temperature. Pair with vanilla ice cream or caramel sauce for extra indulgence. Can be stored at room temperature for up to three days, or refrigerated for a week. Freeze individually wrapped bars for up to three months for later enjoyment.
