Ingredients
  

Meats

  • 1 lb ground beef Lean ground beef is recommended.
  • 1 lb sweet Italian sausage Choose one that balances sweetness and spice.

Vegetables

  • 1 whole onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

Beans and Tomatoes

  • 1 can (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes
  • 1 can (15 oz) kidney beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 can (15 oz) black beans, drained and rinsed

Liquids

  • 2 cups beef broth

Spices

  • 2 tablespoons chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon cumin

Preparation

  • Heat a large pot over medium heat and add the ground beef and sweet Italian sausage. Brown the meats thoroughly, breaking them apart as they cook and draining any excess fat.
  • Add the chopped onion and minced garlic to the pot. Cook for about five minutes, until the onion becomes translucent.
  • Stir in the diced tomatoes, kidney beans, and black beans. Mix everything thoroughly.
  • Pour in the beef broth to combine all ingredients and create a rich broth.
  • Sprinkle in the chili powder, cumin, salt, and pepper. Stir well to ensure even coating of the spices.
  • Increase heat until the mixture reaches a gentle boil, then reduce to a simmer. Let cook for at least 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • After 30 minutes, taste the chili and adjust seasoning if necessary. Add more chili powder for extra spice if desired.
  • Ladle the chili into individual bowls and serve hot.

Notes
