  • 4 large sweet potatoes
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter Can substitute with plant-based butter for a vegan option.
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar or maple syrup Choose based on sweetness preference.
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream or coconut milk Use coconut milk for a dairy-free version.
  • to taste Salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • to taste Freshly ground black pepper

Optional Toppings

  • to taste chopped pecans Add for crunch.
  • to taste marshmallows A sweet topping option.
  • to taste nutmeg Sprinkle on top for flavor.

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  • Wash the sweet potatoes thoroughly under running water to remove any dirt. Pat them dry.
  • Pierce each sweet potato several times with a fork to allow steam to escape while baking.
  • Place the sweet potatoes directly on the oven rack or on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

Baking

  • Bake in the preheated oven for about 45-60 minutes or until they are tender and easily pierced with a fork.
  • While the sweet potatoes are baking, combine the butter, brown sugar (or maple syrup), heavy cream (or coconut milk), salt, cinnamon, and black pepper in a mixing bowl.

Mashing and Serving

  • Once the sweet potatoes are done, remove them from the oven and let them cool for a few minutes.
  • Carefully cut each sweet potato in half lengthwise and scoop the insides into the mixing bowl with your ingredients.
  • Mash the sweet potato flesh with the mixture until smooth and creamy, adjusting seasoning as desired.
  • Transfer the mixture back into the sweet potato skins for serving or place it in a serving dish.
  • If desired, top with chopped pecans, marshmallows, or a sprinkle of nutmeg before serving.
  • Serve warm and enjoy!

Notes

To achieve the most meltingly tender sweet potatoes, choose ones that are firm and smooth. You can microwave them for 5-10 minutes to cut down on baking time. For storage, keep cooled sweet potatoes in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days, or freeze for longer.
