Ingredients

For the beef mixture

  • 1 pound ground beef Using quality beef like chuck and sirloin is recommended.
  • 1 cup diced onion
  • 1 cup diced bell pepper
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 teaspoons mustard
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder

For the garlic toast

  • 4 slices thick-cut bread Sourdough or ciabatta works well.
  • 2 tablespoons butter, softened
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced (for toast)

For topping

  • 1 cup shredded cheese Cheddar or cheese of choice.

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef. Cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spatula as it cooks.
  • Drain any excess fat, then add the diced onion and bell pepper. Sauté for about 3-5 minutes until the vegetables soften.
  • Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute until fragrant.
  • Add the ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, salt, black pepper, smoked paprika, and chili powder to the skillet. Mix well and let it bubble gently for about 5 minutes. Remove from heat once combined.
  • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).

Garlic Toast

  • In a small bowl, mix the softened butter and minced garlic. Spread this mixture evenly over each slice of bread.
  • Place the bread slices on a baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for about 5-7 minutes, or until the edges turn golden and crispy.

Assembly

  • Once the toast is ready, remove it from the oven. Spoon the beef mixture generously over each slice, then sprinkle the shredded cheese on top.
  • Return the baking sheet to the oven and bake for another 5 minutes or until the cheese melts and becomes bubbly.
  • Take the dish out of the oven and let it cool slightly before serving.
