Cake Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened Make sure the butter is at room temperature.
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs Use room temperature eggs.
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour Sift the flour before measuring.
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup poppy seeds
  • Zest of 2 large oranges Use organic if possible for best flavor.
  • 1/2 cup fresh orange juice Freshly squeezed is preferred.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan.
  • In a large mixing bowl, cream the softened butter and granulated sugar together until light and fluffy, about 3-4 minutes.
  • Add the eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
  • In another bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add this dry mixture to the butter and sugar mixture, alternating with the orange juice, starting and ending with the flour mixture.
  • Stir in the poppy seeds, orange zest, and vanilla extract until just combined.
  • Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan, smoothing the top with a spatula.

Baking

  • Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  • Once done, remove the cake from the oven and let it cool in the pan for about 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

For serving, drizzle a light glaze made from powdered sugar and fresh orange juice over the cake. Top with fresh orange slices or a sprinkle of powdered sugar for an elegant touch.
