  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened to room temperature Ensure butter is at room temperature for best results.
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons peppermint extract Adjust to taste if stronger flavor is desired.
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour Measure correctly to avoid dense cookies.
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1.5 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • Crushed peppermint candy or sprinkles for decoration (optional) Add for festive presentation.

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy.
  • Add the eggs one at a time, mixing until fully incorporated after each addition. Then, stir in the peppermint extract until combined.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt.
  • Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Be careful not to overmix.
  • Fold in the semi-sweet chocolate chips until evenly distributed throughout the dough.
  • Drop portions of dough onto ungreased baking sheets, spacing them about 2 inches apart. If desired, sprinkle crushed peppermint or festive sprinkles on top.
  • Bake for 10-12 minutes, until edges are golden brown.
  • Allow cookies to cool on the baking sheets for about 5 minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.
