  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 tablespoon red food coloring
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Preparation

  • Prepare your waffle iron according to the manufacturer's instructions.
  • In a mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Whisk until evenly mixed.
  • In another bowl, whisk the wet ingredients: buttermilk, egg, vegetable oil, red food coloring, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  • Gently combine the wet and dry ingredients, being careful not to overmix. A few lumps are fine.

Cooking

  • Pour the batter into the preheated waffle iron and cook for about five minutes, or until the waffles are fluffy and deep red.
  • Carefully remove the waffles from the iron and serve warm with your choice of topping.
