Ingredients
  

Dough Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup sourdough starter (discard is fine)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Filling and Topping

  • 1/2 cup salted caramel sauce
  • 1 large egg wash (1 egg beaten with 1 tablespoon water) for brushing
  • Coarse sea salt for garnish

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, brown sugar, and salt. Mix until well blended.
  • Add the softened butter and mix until you achieve a crumbly texture.
  • Incorporate the sourdough starter, egg, cinnamon, and vanilla extract. Stir until a soft dough forms.
  • Divide the dough into two halves. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to firm up.

Baking

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Roll out one half of the dough on a lightly floured surface into a rectangle about 1/4 inch thick.
  • Cut the rectangle into smaller rectangles (about 4x6 inches) to form the base of the bars.
  • Place half of the rectangles on the baking sheet and spoon a small amount of salted caramel sauce into the center of each.
  • Roll out the second half of the dough and cut into equal-sized rectangles. Place over the filled ones.
  • Press the edges with a fork to seal and create a decorative border.
  • Brush the tops with egg wash and sprinkle with coarse sea salt.
  • Bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.
  • Let the bars cool before slicing and serving.

Notes

Serve warm with a drizzle of salted caramel sauce or pair with vanilla ice cream for a decadent dessert. These bars can also be enhanced with fresh fruit.
