Ingredients

Main ingredients

  • 3 to 4 pounds beef brisket Choose a well-marbled piece for optimal tenderness.
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil For searing the brisket.
  • 1 medium onion, chopped Adds flavor to the dish.
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced Enhances the taste.
  • 2 cups beef broth To keep the brisket moist.
  • 1 cup barbecue sauce For flavoring the brisket.
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar Adds sweetness to the sauce.
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce For additional depth of flavor.
  • 1 tablespoon smoked paprika For a smoky flavor.
  • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper For seasoning.
  • 1 teaspoon salt To enhance flavors.
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder Adds extra onion flavor.
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder Enhances the garlic flavor.
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper Optional for heat.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Trim any excess fat from the brisket and season it generously with salt, black pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, and smoked paprika. Rub the spices into the meat for full flavor.

Searing

  • Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat and sear the brisket on all sides until it develops a nice brown crust, about 4-5 minutes per side.

Cooking in Slow Cooker

  • Remove the brisket from the skillet and place it in a slow cooker.
  • In the same skillet, add the chopped onion and cook until translucent, about 5 minutes. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute.
  • Add the beef broth, barbecue sauce, brown sugar, and Worcestershire sauce to the skillet. Stir to combine, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the pan, and allow to simmer for a few minutes.
  • Pour the sauce mixture over the brisket in the slow cooker, ensuring it is well-coated. If desired, add the optional cayenne pepper.
  • Cover the slow cooker and set it on low. Cook the brisket for 8 to 10 hours, or until the meat is tender and easily pulls apart with a fork.

Serving

  • Once cooked, remove the brisket from the slow cooker and let it rest for 15 minutes before slicing against the grain. Serve with some of the cooking liquid for added flavor.

Notes

When serving, always cut against the grain for the most tender slices. Leftover cooking liquid can be added while reheating or serving over the brisket.
