Ingredients

Dry Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves

Wet Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup sour cream

Add-ins

  • 2 cups finely chopped apples (preferably Granny Smith)
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon turbinado sugar (for topping)

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9x5-inch loaf pan with butter or spray, then lightly flour it.
  • In a medium bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, baking soda, salt, ground cinnamon, nutmeg, and ground cloves. Whisk together and set aside.
  • In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy, about 3-5 minutes.
  • Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  • Gradually mix in half of the dry ingredient mixture, alternating with the sour cream, followed by the remaining dry mixture. Mix until just combined.
  • Fold in the finely chopped apples and nuts (if using) gently into the batter.
  • Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan and smooth out the top. Sprinkle with turbinado sugar.

Baking

  • Bake in the preheated oven for 50-60 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  • Let the bread cool in the pan for about 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely.
