Instructions
Activate the Yeast:
Mix warm water, sugar, and yeast in a bowl. Let sit 5–10 minutes until frothy.
Mix the Dough:
In a large bowl, combine flour and salt. Add yeast mixture and olive oil. Stir until a rough dough forms.
Knead:
Knead on a floured surface for 8–10 minutes or in a stand mixer for 5–6 minutes until smooth and elastic.
First Rise:
Place dough in an oiled bowl, cover, and let rise for 1–2 hours until doubled.
Shape & Second Rise:
Punch down dough, shape into loaf, place in a greased pan, and let rise 30–45 minutes.
Bake:
Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake 30–35 minutes until golden and hollow-sounding when tapped.
Cool:
Let cool on a wire rack for at least 20 minutes before slicing.
Notes
For a crispier crust, add steam to the oven by placing a pan of hot water on the lower rack during baking.
